Hindustan Zinc Ltd, a Vedanta group firm, has partnered with IIT Madras to advance zinc-air battery technology. The collaboration will focus on developing a 1 kWh electrically-rechargeable zinc-air battery prototype.
Zinc-air batteries present a cost-effective and durable alternative to expensive, imported lithium-ion batteries. Zinc’s abundance, affordability, and established safety record make it an attractive option for energy storage solutions.
The zinc-air battery aims to address key challenges posed by lithium-ion batteries, such as high costs, resource scarcity, and safety issues.
Zinc-based batteries offer longer storage duration, greater durability, and more affordability compared to lithium-based alternatives.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized the partnership’s goal of redefining energy storage and contributing to a sustainable future. Zinc is four times cheaper than lithium and provides better performance for long-duration energy storage.
This collaboration marks a significant step in the evolution of zinc-based battery technologies, supporting the development of greener energy solutions. The initiative underscores Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to exploring new energy applications to drive sustainability and reduce reliance on imported materials.
