NLC India Renewables Signs PPA with RVUNL for 810 MW Solar Project

7 May 2025 , 09:28 AM

NLC India Renewables Ltd. (NIRL), a 100% subsidiary of Navratna PSU NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL), has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (RVUNL) for setting up an 810 MW solar power project. This project aligns with India’s national goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The signing ceremony was held in Jaipur and was graced by senior government officials, including Smt. Arti Dogra, IAS (CMD, DISCOMs Rajasthan), Shri Nathmal Didel, IAS (Secretary – Energy), Shri Prasanna Kumar Motupalli (CMD, NLCIL & NIRL), and Shri Devendra Shringi (CMD, RVUNL).

The 810 MW solar scheme will be set up at the Pugal Solar Park located in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, a region with high solar radiation and extensive barren lands. It is highly suitable for solar development.

The project was auctioned through a competitive tariff-based bidding process carried out by RVUNL and will be executed under the MNRE’s Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park (UMREPP) Scheme – Mode 8. This is NLCIL’s biggest renewable energy project till date and is a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards green energy.

Upon commissioning, the power plant is estimated to produce about 2 billion units (BU) of green power per annum. The project is further estimated to reduce about 1.5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per year, much contributing towards India’s low-carbon development strategy.

NLCIL, India’s first CPSU to have commissioned 1 GW of renewable energy capacity, is now nearing its goal of attaining 10 GW of green energy capacity by 2030.

CMD Prasanna Kumar Motupalli described the 810 MW project as “jewel in the crown” of NLCIL’s clean energy portfolio and reiterated the company’s dedication to sustainable development and India’s energy transition. The project will be incorporated in the infrastructure of the larger 2000 MW Pugal Solar Park being established by RVUNL.

NLCIL is also considering developing further renewable capacity of up to 2,000 MW and three lignite-based thermal power units (3×125 MW) in Rajasthan through joint ventures, backed by captive lignite mines. Its long history of cooperation with the State of Rajasthan remains strong, founded on constructive partnership and mutual aspirations for sustainable energy development.
