Tata Group Invests ₹950 Crore in Agratas Battery Plants

9 Sep 2024 , 03:05 PM

Tata Group has committed ₹950 Crore to Agratas, its battery manufacturing subsidiary, as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in the new energy sector.

Agratas aims to enhance its manufacturing capabilities to support the automotive industry’s shift toward cleaner energy solutions. The company is establishing advanced battery manufacturing facilities in both India and the UK.

According to Tata Sons’ 106th annual report, Agratas plans to construct a 40 GWh gigafactory in the UK and a 20 GWh plant in Sanand, Gujarat.

The name “Agratas,” derived from the Sanskrit word “agra” combined with “gravitas,” signifies leadership and a forward-looking vision, reflecting the company’s goal to lead in energy solutions for future generations.

Agratas specializes in designing and producing batteries for the automotive and energy sectors, with initial customers including Tata Group companies Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata Motors.

The company also plans to manufacture batteries for two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and energy storage solutions.

In the UK, Agratas is partnering with local entities such as Somerset Council, Bridgwater and Taunton College, and the Gravity Smart Campus to develop customized education and training programs.

The gigafactory will be located on the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater in Somerset, emphasizing community involvement and education.

The 40 GWh factory is expected to provide nearly half of the UK’s projected battery manufacturing capacity needed for the automotive sector by the early 2030s
