Uber India Enhances Passenger Security with Audio Recording and Women-Specific Rides

Uber India now allows riders to record audio during trips if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable. The encrypted recordings are private and can only be accessed by Uber if submitted as part of a safety report.

The audio feature complies with India’s one-party consent law and ensures riders’ privacy. Uber accesses the recordings only in case of a safety report submission.

Female drivers now have the option to accept rides exclusively from female passengers, with over 21,000 trips made using this feature, supporting women drivers’ safety and boosting their earnings.

Uber introduces “Safety Preferences,” allowing riders to customize safety settings, including sharing trip details with trusted contacts, activating audio recording, and RideCheck alerts, tailored to specific times or locations.

Uber has rolled out a live SOS feature, allowing riders and drivers to send their trip details and live location to the police in emergencies. This is currently available in Telangana, with plans for expansion. Uber partners with Durga NGO to sensitize drivers about appropriate conduct with women riders.

According to the 2024 India Economic Impact Report, 95% of female riders prioritize safety when choosing Uber, with 84% considering Uber the safest transport option.
