Biocon Biologics’ ‘Embedding Specialist Nurses in Diabetes Care’ project, which was carried out in conjunction with Diabetes Africa and St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Ethiopia, was successful in developing a reproducible model for upskilling nurses.
To ensure the long-term viability of the ‘Embedding Specialist Nurses in Diabetes Care Programme’, Bengaluru-based Biocon Biologics has pledged multi-year support to Diabetes Africa and St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Diabetes Africa has collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders as part of this program, including representatives from healthcare facilities, professional associations involved in diabetes care, health-related non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and officials from Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health.
Ethiopia, with a prevalence of 2-3%, is one of the top four nations in Sub-Saharan Africa for adult diabetics. Diabetes accounts for roughly 2% of total deaths in the country. Ethiopia faces a serious health concern due to a dearth of skilled healthcare workers and an increase in the prevalence of diabetes.
Dr. Bernadette Adeyileka-Tracz, executive director of Diabetes Africa, stated that diabetes is a global emergency. Ethiopia’s healthcare workforce is primarily comprised of nurses who lead healthcare delivery, as is the case in many other African countries. St Paul’s experience as a pioneer in this field gives us hope that diabetes expert nurses will be game changers. This project aims to make systemic, long-term changes to address the growing health epidemic.
At around 3.05 PM, Biocon was trading 1.31% higher at ₹363.35, against the previous close of ₹358.65 on NSE. The counter touched an intraday high and low of ₹366.65, and ₹358.05, respectively.
