CIL Achieves Record Coal Production, Targets 838 MT for FY 2025

2 Apr 2024 , 10:48 AM

Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved a remarkable milestone by producing 773.6 million tonnes (MTs) of coal in FY 2024, showcasing a substantial 10% growth compared to the previous fiscal year’s production of 703.2 MTs.

India witnessed a historic moment with coal and lignite production reaching 1 billion tons (1,039 MT) in FY24, where CIL’s contribution stood at 773.6 MT, accounting for 77% of the total production.

The Minister of Coal and Mines, Pralhad Joshi, highlighted CIL’s impressive 70% growth in production over the last decade and expressed determination to eliminate the import of substitutable thermal coal by 2025-26.

CIL recorded double-digit growth for two consecutive years, a first in its history, with an output expansion of 70.4 MTs. Over the past two financial years, CIL increased its production by 151 MTs, surpassing the combined increase of 128.4 MTs achieved in the preceding six years.

March 2024 witnessed the highest-ever coal production of 88.6 MTs for any month, according to company data.

Five coal-producing arms of CIL exceeded their annual targets for the second consecutive year, including BCCL, CCL, NCL, WCL, and MCL.

MCL, a subsidiary of CIL based in Odisha, became the first coal-producing company in India to exceed 200 MT of production, reaching 206.1 MTs. Total coal supplies in FY 2024 reached 753.5 MTs, marking an 8.5% increase over the previous fiscal year.

Supplies to the power sector increased to 618.5 MTs, exceeding the assigned commitment by 8.5 MTs, while supplies to the non-power sector rose to 135 MTs.

Grade conformity improved to 76% in FY 2024, up from 70% in the previous year, attributed to better quality coal supplies.

CIL ended FY 2024 with a coal inventory of around 90 MTs, a nearly 30% increase compared to the previous financial year. The average daily loading of coal rakes increased to 292.2 rakes per day in FY 2024, up from 273.6 rakes/day in FY 2023. CIL aims for a production and off-take of 838 MTs for FY 2025.
