RAIN Industries Ltd announced on Wednesday (October 9) that Northern Graphite Corporation and RAIN Carbon Inc signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to collaborate on the development and commercialisation of advanced battery anode materials (BAM) for lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on the electric vehicle market.
RAIN Carbon Inc. is a completely owned subsidiary of RAIN Industries Limited.
Northern and Rain will collaborate to develop and commercialise natural graphite BAM products aimed at extending cycle life, improving charging speed, and reducing electrode swelling in lithium-ion battery cells.
This research closes the stability gap between natural and synthetic graphite, allowing for increased use of natural graphite in electric vehicle (EV) battery cells.
The Joint Development Agreement comes after Northern launched its Battery Materials Group (NGCBM) in February and Rain announced its new Technology Innovation Centre for Energy Storage Materials (Innovation Centre) in August.
NGCBM acquired a fully equipped, cutting-edge carbon and battery laboratory in Frankfurt, Germany, capable of producing BAM derived from Northern’s Lac-des-Îles graphite mine in Canada and building lithium-ion batteries to automakers’ specifications for critical characteristics such as cycle life, driving range, and charging speed.
