Tata Power-DDL, India Smart Grid Forum to do Vehicle-to-Grid technology demonstration project

22 May 2024 , 01:39 PM

Tata Power Delhi Distribution announced on Tuesday that it has signed an initial agreement with the India Smart Grid Forum for the ‘Vehicle-to-Grid Technology Demonstration Project’.

According to a business statement, the programme intends to investigate the potential of EVs to provide important grid services such as frequency and voltage support, assess their viability as backup power sources during outages, and examine the impact of bi-directional charging.

The pilot project attempts to demonstrate the fundamentals of how electric vehicles (EVs) interact with the grid. This project aims to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation and energy sectors, according to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (Tata Power-DDL), which delivers electricity to a population of 7 million in north Delhi.

“The plan is perfectly linked with our goal of improving sustainable energy solutions and creating future-ready infrastructure. The project has enormous potential to transform the way we manage our power grids and seamlessly integrate EVs,” Tata Power-DDL CEO Gajanan S. Kale said.

Furthermore, the research will look into how EVs might participate in the power market by storing electricity at cheap prices and selling it back during peak hours. It will also assess the viability of charging EVs with renewable electricity.

The project will not only demonstrate the technical capabilities of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), but also investigate its commercial potential, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future, according to Reji Kumar Pillai, President of ISGF.

Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission, Central Electricity Authority, and Tata Motors are all observers of this demonstration project, with the University of Delaware in the United States serving as the V2G technology partner, according to the announcement.
