On Monday (September 16), mining company Vedanta Ltd said Vedanta Aluminium is responding to a breach at its process water storage pond at the Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha, which happened on September 15, 2024, owing to harsh weather conditions.
The breach, which was caused by elevated water levels and pressure in the dam’s catchment area, had an impact on the region’s agricultural land. This extreme weather caused elevated water levels and pressure in the dam’s catchment area, which led to the breach despite Vedanta’s ongoing preventive monitoring and safety measures, a Vedanta representative said.
Vedanta Aluminium staff notified state authorities and swiftly mobilised workers to contain the disaster and reduce the impact on the neighbouring population.
Although no injuries or livestock losses have been reported, the overflow has had an impact on agricultural areas. Vedanta Aluminium is providing potable drinking water to the affected areas and sending out mobile health teams to provide medical support. The company stated in its press release that the situation is fully under control.
Additionally, the company stated that there is no disruption in its current operations and the refinery continues to operate in compliance with regulatory requirements.
At around 10.44 AM, Vedanta was trading 1.46% higher at ₹452.80, against the previous close of ₹446.30 on NSE. The counter touched an intraday high and low of ₹454.25, and ₹447.05, respectively.
