The Tata group has finalized the acquisition of Taiwan’s Wistron’s manufacturing facility in Karnataka, signalling its expansion into Apple iPhone assembly.
On Wednesday, the salt-to-software conglomerate inked a binding share purchase agreement with SMS InfoComm (Singapore) and Wistron Hong Kong Ltd to purchase 100% of Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India).
On October 27, Wistron India’s parent firm informed the Taiwan Stock Exchange of Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd’s (TEPL) plan to purchase the iPhone assembly business in Kolar for $125 million.
The signing of the share purchase agreement to buy Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Pvt. Ltd is a significant step forward for us. The EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) business in India is primed for expansion, thanks to the government’s strong backing, and we are pleased to be a part of this success narrative, said Randhir Thakur, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Electronics, in a statement.
Wistron of Taiwan joined domestic rival Foxconn in 2018 to begin assembly of iPhones in India, with Pegatron of Taiwan joining in 2022.
