Alpha opportunities have been available more in the mid-cap and small-cap space. In April, mid-cap index gained 2.12% while the Nifty was down -0.41%. Here is the story of mid-cap stars.

Metals continued to play out in the mid-cap space too. SAIL gained 55.7% in Apr-21 and JSPL gained 36%. The action also extended to NALCO but he basic story was the same; robust demand and hopes of further price hikes.

The other big star mid-cap story in Apr-21 was pharmaceuticals. Wockhardt gained 27.9% in the month of Apr-21 and Glenmark gained 27.8%. Apollo Hospitals also joined big gainers in the healthcare list.

Some mid-cap stars were less about sectors and more about stories. Adani Transmission and Adani Enterprises continued from where they left off in March. Sun TV, of the Maran group, gained 19.7% in Apr-21 while ICICI Securities starred on the back of robust broking show.

Time for a longer-term 1-year view. Among the unlikely mid-cap stars were Tata Power gaining 218% on its renewable focus and Tata Chemicals gaining 172% on the specialty chemicals story. Mphasis gained 150% in the last year as Blackstone continued to woo. Mid-caps were the big story of markets.
