India's November thermal coal imports at a 10-month low

9 Dec 2022 , 03:15 PM

According to data from consulting firm Coalmint, India’s thermal coal imports fell to their lowest levels in ten months during November, primarily due to increased domestic coal production. Compared to 12.03 million tonnes in October and 9.45 million tonnes in November 2021, the country imported 10.83 million tonnes of thermal coal in November, according to Coalmint data. With Coal India, a state-run company that produces 80% of India’s coal, imports decreased mainly as a result of increased production.

The largest coal miner in the world has increased production by a sixth to 412.6 million tonnes in the first eight months of the current fiscal year, putting it on course to meet annual production targets for the first time since 2010. At the cost of South Africa and Australia, Indonesia and Russia saw an increase in their proportion of the global imports of coal and coke. The only nations from which total shipments grew were Russia and the United States, according to the data.
