The Azim Premji University held its first convocation ceremony on 1 October 2013 at Bangalore. The Governor of Karnataka Dr. Hans Raj Bhardwaj, who is the Visitor of the University, and Azim Premji, Chancellor of the University presented degrees to the first batch of students.
Established in 2010, the Azim Premji University is founded and sponsored by the Azim Premji Foundation. The University is a philanthropic, not- for profit institution with a clear social purpose, of contributing towards a just, humane, equitable and sustainable society. For this the University is focused on offering programs and conducting research in Education and related areas of Human Development fields.
The University currently offers two programs: a Masters in Education and a Masters in Development. These two programs have multiple specializations e.g. in Education Management, Curriculum and Pedagogy, Health and Nutrition.  Other specializations like Early-childhood-education, Special Education, Public Policy, Law & Governance will be introduced over the next few years.
The first batch of students that was conferred with the degrees today is already working with various social sector organizations across the country, having completed the program in May 2013. The students were placed in these organizations during the campus placement at the University. The first batch had 85 students. The student strength has risen to 260 students in the third batch. The University currently has nearly 400 students in the two Masters Programs and more than 120 faculty and staff. Nearly 50% of students come from rural areas and small towns of India, across 20 states. Over 50% of the students have been offered financial support; this is one manifestation of the University policy to not let financial needs come in the way of good higher education for students with a genuine social commitment.
The University is also engaged deeply with capacity development of in-service professionals. The focus of this has been government officials across various departments such as education and health. The University also acts as a resource centre for the large scale field work in school education of the Azim Premji Foundation.
