In May, Facebook responded to around 25% of individual complaints and Instagram to 40% of them

3 Jul 2023 , 11:37 AM

According to the most recent India Monthly Report from social media giant Meta, Facebook only addressed about 27% of user complaints while Instagram addressed less than half of all user complaints in May 2023. In May compared to April data, the number of individual complaints on Facebook more than quadrupled to 16,995 and increased by almost 68% on Instagram.

According to category-specific data provided by Meta, less than one-tenth of user complaints that content showed them partially nude or engaging in sexual activity were ‘actioned on’ by Facebook.

In the case of Instagram, the social media site responded to 50 percent of all user reports of violations of its ‘content showing me in nudity/partial nudity or in a sexual act’ policy.

According to the meta-transparency report, complaints regarding ‘bullying or harassment’ (less than 7%), ‘inappropriate or abusive content’ (about 8%), and fraudulent profiles (about 48%) received less than a fourth of the attention from Facebook.

In total, 16,995 individuals complained to Facebook, and in 2,325 of those cases, the social media platform gave them tools to help them solve their problems.

According to Meta’s report for Facebook, ‘of the remaining 14,670 reports where a specialized review was required, we reviewed content in accordance with our policies, and we ultimately took action on 2,299 reports.’

Facebook did not provide the category-by-category breakdown of the actions taken in response to 2,299 new reports.

Instagram received 16,267 user complaints, of which it took action on 6,499 incidents, totaling 2,671 reports, following specialized evaluation.

Only around 5% of users who reported that their account had been hacked received tools from Instagram and roughly 50% of users who claimed that the content showed them in partial nudity or performing a sexual act.

The corporation did not include the category or policy-specific information for 2,671 reports in the report.

Meta responded to two orders it got from the Grievances Appellate Committee (GAC).

The GAC investigates user complaints when social media giants’ responses leave them unsatisfied.
