Indian politicians: Big investors in mutual funds

Most candidates contesting for elections have invested lakhs of rupees, while a few have invested crores of rupees

A large number of Indian politicians have lakhs of rupees invested in mutual funds, according to a media report.
Among the major politicians who have made huge investment in mutual funds include Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Arun Jaitley, Varun Gandhi, Amar Singh, Shazia Ilmi, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ambika Soni and Shashi Tharoor, the report added.
Most candidates contesting for elections have invested lakhs of rupees, while a few have invested crores of rupees.
According to the election affidavit of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, he has over Rs 81 lakh in mutual funds while his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has above Rs 82 lakh in these products, the report said.
Amar Singh, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate from Fatehpur Sikri, has investment worth Rs 6.27 crore in mutual funds. BJP's Arun Jaitley has investments worth Rs. 2 crore in mutual funds.
Congress' Jyotiraditya Scindia has invested Rs. 67 lakh in mutual funds, while BJP's Hema Malini has mutual funds worth Rs. 37,000.
A total of 45 fund houses together manage assets worth Rs 9 trillion collected from various investors, but their penetration is very low, especially in smaller cities.
