In an effort to address climate change, world leaders are gathering in the United Arab Emirates this week for the COP28. AdPower has announced that it has started a green ammonia combustion pilot project at its Mundra plant.
According to a press statement from the Adani Group, the project involves the Mundra plant, a sizable private power station, cofiring up to 20% green ammonia in the boiler of a conventional coal-fired 330 MW unit.
The boilers’ feedstock would be green ammonia, which is created from green hydrogen, which is created via electrolysis utilising renewable energy.
Since ammonia doesn’t contain carbon, burning it releases no carbon dioxide, making it a long-term carbon-neutral substitute for fossil fuels.
In order to implement the pilot and consider expanding to further Adani Power units and stations, Adani Power has teamed up with IHI and Kowa-Japan. IHI is a heavy industry business with ammonia firing technology, whereas Kowa is involved in energy-generating and energy-saving products.
At IHI’s facility in Japan, combustion tests have started using a 20% ammonia blend, mimicking the technology used at the Mundra Power Station.
