Bombay Hospital ties up with Apollo Hospitals to boost liver transplants

19 Oct 2022 , 07:55 AM

Tuesday saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Apollo Hospitals and the Bombay Hospital that will increase the number of liver transplants in Mumbai and Western India.

The partnership with Bombay Hospital will give more patients in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region access to Apollo’s cutting-edge liver transplant programme.

Apollo has already signed 11 such contracts under which it will offer its knowledge, equipment, instruction, post-operative care, and advice on liver transplants.

Apollo also disclosed that it will broaden the scope of its liver transplant programmes in Gujarat and Maharashtra, with Darius Mirza serving as the clinical director. Mirza is a known expert in hepato-pancreato-biliary transplant surgery around the world.

The Navi Mumbai super-specialty quaternary care hospital, which on Wednesday finished 53 life-saving paediatric liver transplant surgeries, will oversee the Apollo liver transplant programme.

As of now, the hospital has handled 170 liver cases, of which 34 are cadaver and 12 are overseas.

Apollo Hospitals provided major fundraising efforts through partnerships with financial-aid programmes and NGOs to support numerous underprivileged liver transplant patients.

The achievement of the milestone took five years, offering children with end-stage liver disease a new lease on life. A 4-month-old infant and older kids with disorders like biliary atresia and congenital liver disease that caused liver failure were among the transplant recipients.

A 500-bed quaternary care hospital with JCI accreditation is Apollo Hospitals in Navi Mumbai. The hospital has a highly effective liver, kidney, and heart transplant programme. A multidisciplinary team of qualified and experienced specialists who have performed considerable liver and HPB work oversees the transplant programme.
