CBI closes case against former NCCF Chairman and Adani Enterprises

22 Aug 2023 , 10:39 AM

According to sources, the CBI has closed its case against Adani Enterprises and a former head of the National Cooperative Consumer Federation for suspected irregularities in the award of a contract for supplying imported coal to the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation.

The CBI has filed the closure report on the case registered in 2020, in which it also booked the then NCCF managing director G P Gupta and senior adviser S C Singhal.

According to officials, the special court will now decide whether to accept the closure, refer it back to the CBI for further investigation, or proceed with the trial based on the present materials.

The CBI filed the case against Adani Enterprises, former NCCF chairman Virender Singh, and others in 2020, following a three-year preliminary investigation based on a complaint filed by Premraj Kuar, then-deputy secretary of the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution.

The CBI informed the special court that Kuar voluntarily retired from service, and it has now issued notices to both the former officer and the new incumbent to appear at the next hearing date.

The CBI lodged a case of cheating and corruption against Adani Enterprises and the previous chairman of the multi-state cooperative NCCF based on the findings of the investigation for suspected irregularities in picking a business for a tender to provide coal to power units in Andhra Pradesh.

The agency said that senior NCCF officers engaged in post-tender negotiations with Adani Enterprises in order to provide it with excessive benefits despite the fact that the company did not qualify.
