State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) announces plans to establish two thermal power plants in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. The investment for these projects amounts to a substantial Rs 21,547 crore.
One thermal plant is proposed to be set up near Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, while the other is planned in Sundergarh district, Odisha. The Ministry of Coal confirms that the Madhya Pradesh project will be a joint venture with the state government and will have a capacity of 1 x 660 MW.
The estimated cost of this project is Rs 5,600 crore, and it is currently in advanced stages of approval. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a CIL subsidiary, will invest Rs 857 crore as equity in this joint venture with Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Ltd.
Work on the Madhya Pradesh project is scheduled to start by the end of the financial year, with completion expected by 2028. The second project in Odisha is initiated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), another CIL subsidiary.
MCL established Mahanadi Basin Power Limited as a wholly-owned subsidiary for this undertaking.
The Odisha project aims to set up a 2×800 MW pithead thermal power plant near Basundhara mines in Sundergarh district. The estimated cost for this ambitious venture is Rs 15,947 crore.
Work on the Odisha project is anticipated to begin by the middle of the next year, with a projected completion date also set for 2028. These ventures signify Coal India Ltd’s commitment to strengthening the nation’s power generation capacity and contributing to India’s energy requirements.
