Coal India Limited informed that it has recorded a significant increase in its coking coal production, which rose to 54.6 million tonnes (MTs), indicating a remarkable 17.2% y-o-y growth from the previous year’s 46.6 MTs.
The impressive surge in production amounts to a substantial increase of 8 MTs. Moreover, the company has surpassed its production target by 107.3%, marking a significant achievement for the company.
This development holds great importance, particularly considering that the Ministry of Coal has urged Coal India to increase its production of coking coal to 105 MTs by 2030, as part of a larger effort to minimize imports and reduce foreign exchange expenditures, said the company in its media release on Thursday.
The two subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), namely BCCL and CCL, located in Jharkhand, play a significant role in coking coal production, contributing almost the entire output of 54.3 MTs in 2022-23.
BCCL, in particular, produced a substantial amount of 33.7 MTs, accounting for nearly 62% of the total output and marking a remarkable growth of 16% compared to the 29 MTs produced in the previous fiscal year. On the other hand, CCL achieved a growth of approximately 20%, producing 20.6 MTs.
Coal India has commissioned two new coking coal washeries and refurbished three older ones. Additionally, the company has plans to invest around Rs 4,000 crore in setting up nine more new washeries, some of which will replace the old ones. At present, Coal India operates 11 coking coal washeries.
