According to figures released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on June 22, domestic air passenger traffic increased to 1.2 crore in May 2022, an increase of 11% from the month before.
According to the statistics, domestic carriers transported a combined 1.22 crore passengers in May 2022, bringing air traffic closer to its pre-pandemic level.
IndiGo’s passenger load factor increased to 81% over the past month from 78.7% in April 2022. SpiceJet’s passenger load factor increased from 85.9 percent in April 2022 to 89.1 percent in May 2022.
With more than half of the market share, IndiGo maintained to hold the top spot. The airline’s market share did, however, slightly decline from 58.3% in April to 57.9% this month. From 9.1% the month before to 9.5% in May, SpiceJet’s market share grew.
AirAsia was the most reliable airline last month, according to the DGCA, with an “on-time performance” rate of 90.8%. With 87.5% of its flights operating as planned, Vistara placed second on the list.
The increase in domestic aviation traffic coincides with a decrease in the COVID-19 threat. While the number of infections has lately increased in Mumbai and Delhi, travel restrictions are not likely to be implemented because the hospitalization rate continues to be low.
In the fiscal year 2022—2023, rating agency ICRA predicted that global passenger traffic would increase to 96—97% of pre-pandemic levels.
Along with an increase in domestic air traffic, there has been a rise in passenger numbers on overseas flights. The volume of foreign air travel has surpassed 72% of its pre-pandemic level since India restarted it on March 27 after a two-year halt.
