Under its Smart Meter National Program, the state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) reported on Monday that it had installed more than 30 lakh smart prepaid metres in five states and the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar.
According to a statement from the business, EESL has finished installing more than 10.5 lakh smart meters in Bihar, 11.57 lakh in Uttar Pradesh, 1.24 lakh in Rajasthan, 5.3 lakh in Haryana, about 64,000 in the NDMC area of Delhi, and 74,000 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
“The company has contracts with the utilities and state-designated organizations in certain areas for the extensive deployment of smart metres. Additionally, EESL hopes to deploy over 47 lakh smart meters by December 2023”, it read.
According to EESL, these smart meters improve the operational performance of power distribution companies (DISCOMs) by improving the efficiency of billing and collection, lowering the cost of operation and maintenance, and raising the level of service.
On its website, the Smart Meter National Program states that it seeks to replace 25 crore conventional meters in India with smart meters.
A smart meter is connected to a web-based monitoring system, which will assist utilities to reduce commercial losses, increasing revenues, and acting as a key tool in reforming the power industry.
NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, REC Limited, and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited are partners in the joint venture known as EESL. It focuses on power sector innovations that are driven by solutions.
