Equity indices closed marginally lower on December 18, with Nifty around 21,400, breaking the bullish momentum. At close, the Sensex was down 168.66 points (0.24%) at 71,315.09, and the Nifty was down 38 points (0.18%) at 21,418.70.
In a volatile session, domestic indices began negatively but recovered in the initial hours, trading flat for most of the first half. Bears dominated the second half, pulling the indices into the red.
Top Nifty losers included Power Grid Corporation, JSW Steel, ICICI Bank, ITC, and Tech Mahindra. Gainers were Bajaj Auto, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Hindalco Industries, and Reliance Industries.
Among sectors, the Pharma index rose by 1%, Capital Goods index by 0.7%, Realty index declined by 1%, and Bank index was down 0.5%.
Broader indices outperformed, with the BSE Midcap index up 0.3%, and the smallcap index gained 0.5%, reaching a fresh record high of 42,371.96 intraday.
