A unit of Foxconn, known as Foxconn Industrial Internet (FII), is set to sign an agreement with India’s Tamil Nadu state on Monday to establish a new facility for electronic components, resulting in the creation of 6,000 job opportunities.
The investment for this new campus, situated in Kancheepuram district near Chennai, the state capital, is estimated at 16 billion Indian rupees ($194.45 million), according to a senior government source.
The new facility will be separate from Foxconn’s sprawling campus near Chennai, which currently houses the assembly of Apple’s iPhones and employs over 35,000 individuals.
The ‘big announcement’ of this new investment was mentioned on LinkedIn by the state government, emphasizing that Tamil Nadu will maintain its position as India’s Electronics Powerhouse.
FII is known for manufacturing electronic devices, cloud service equipment, and industrial robots. However, it remains unclear whether the new facility will produce components for iPhones or other companies, or both.
An official announcement regarding this development is expected later in the day. Foxconn’s chairman, Young Liu, who has been present in India for the federal government’s semiconductor conference, will be attending the signing ceremony with the state chief minister.
