Helicopter with 9 passengers makes emergency landing near ONGC offshore rig; 4 die

A helicopter carrying 9 people on board, including two pilots, made an emergency landing on the Arabian Sea around 11.45 A.M. on June 28, 2022, one nautical mile away from the ONGC offshore rig Sagar Kiran.

The Regional Contingency Plan (West) (RCP) was immediately activated, and the incident was reported to the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. ONGC vessels stationed nearby were mobilized for a search and rescue operation.

One person was rescued by a lifeboat launched from the ONGC Rig Sagar Kiran, and four others were rescued by the ONGC stand-by vessel Malviya16. Despite the inclement weather, the rescue operations were completed quickly.

The Navy also sent vessels and a helicopter, while the Coast Guard sent vessels and an aircraft.

Four people who had been rescued by a Navy helicopter were brought to the base unconscious and taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, they were unable to survive. 

An inquiry has been instituted in this behalf by ONGC.

At around 12.05 PM, ONGC was trading at Rs148.50 down by Rs0.85 or 0.57% from its previous closing of Rs149.35 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs149.60 and has touched intraday high and low of Rs151.50 and Rs146.25 respectively.
