A cooking stove powered by ethanol fuel, developed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, is expected to be test-launched soon.
Bio-ethanol is an eco-friendly fuel generated through the fermentation process of food grains or sugars.
According to industry insiders, HPCL intends to introduce ethanol dispensers at their retail stores, referred to as ‘ethanol ATMs,’ where customers can obtain canisters of ethanol to use for their stoves.
One industry expert who is familiar with HPCL’s plans commented that since there is an abundant supply of ethanol, and India is increasing its ethanol blending target with petrol, it makes sense to also use ethanol as a cooking fuel. By doing so, the country can reduce its import bill for LPG while benefiting from a sustainable and cost-effective fuel source.
