As domestic equities rose and the dollar index fell throughout the previous night, the rupee strengthened 22 paise to 82.08 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday. The local unit gained more ground to reach 82.08 at the interbank foreign exchange, up 22 paise from its previous closing, after starting the day at 82.21 against the dollar.
In relation to the US dollar, the rupee lost 11 paise on Monday, ending the day at 82.30. The dollar index, which measures how strong the dollar is relative to a basket of six different currencies, increased by 0.10 % to 112.15.
The benchmark for world oil, Brent crude futures, is up 0.32 % to USD 91.91 a barrel. The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 580.07 points, or 0.99 percent, higher at 58,991.05. This was on the domestic equity market. The larger NSE Nifty index also increased, rising 167.85 points, or 0.97 %, to 17,479.65. According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 372.03 crore on Monday, making them net sellers in the capital markets.
