India plans to seek a review of the trade agreement with Japan

8 Sep 2022 , 01:05 PM

In a meeting with his Japanese colleague in Los Angeles on Thursday, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will ask for a review of the country’s free trade deal with Japan, he told reporters.

The Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry is Nishimura Yasutoshi. In these evaluations, two nations often work to increase the market access for their respective domestic goods and resolve trade-related problems.

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Japan went into effect in August 2011.

The assessment is significant because domestic steel makers have frequently voiced their complaints about an increase in imports of steel goods from Japan, including hot-rolled steel and other varieties.

Goyal stated that the trade agreement on trade with Australia is anticipated to be approved by the Australian parliament before the end of this year.

Later this month, Don Farrell, Australia’s new trade minister, will visit India to discuss trade and other matters.

In April, the agreement was signed. He said that there are no current problems of concern between the US and India when asked about potential topics for discussion during his meeting with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.
