Indian stock markets opened on a lackluster note, with Sensex restrained by cuts in index heavyweights TCS and HDFC Bank.
Nifty IT and media each recorded losses exceeding 1%, and all broader market indices traded in the red.
Benchmark indices closed in the green on December 19, with Nifty at 21,450.
At close, Sensex was up by 0.17% at 71,437.19, and Nifty was up by 0.16% at 21,453.10.
In the volatile session, 1833 shares advanced, 1797 shares declined, and 132 shares remained unchanged.
Top gainers on the Nifty included Coal India, Nestle India, Tata Consumer Products, NTPC, and Cipla.
Top losers on the Nifty featured SBI Life Insurance, Hero MotoCorp, Adani Ports, Wipro, and Adani Enterprises.
Mixed trend observed on the sectoral front, with metal, pharma, oil & gas, power, and FMCG rising 0.3-1%, while auto, capital goods, realty, and Information Technology declined 0.3-0.8%.
Among broader indices, the smallcap index hit a fresh record high of 42,544.95 before closing with marginal gains, while BSE Midcap index lost 0.3%.
