According to government data, India’s power consumption increased by more than 9% year-on-year in February to 117.84 billion units. Power consumption increased rapidly in February, indicating that economic activity remained strong. 1 unit of electricity is equal to 1 kilowatt-hour.
According to experts, there was expected to be a significant surge in power consumption and demand in March due to increased economic activity and rising temperatures. The data showed that in February 2022, power consumption reached 108.03 billion units (BU), which is greater than the 103.25 BU consumed during the same month in 2021.
In February 2020, electricity consumption was 103.81 BU. In February 2023, the peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, increased to 209.66 gigawatt (GW). The peak power supply in February 2022 was 193.58 GW, up from 187.97 GW in February 2021.
