Infosys Foundation, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of Infosys, has initiated a groundbreaking scholarship program titled ‘STEM Stars.’ Designed to uplift and empower underprivileged girl students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), this program aims to catalyze educational opportunities for aspiring female scholars.
The ‘STEM Stars’ scholarship program is a dedicated endeavor to foster education in STEM disciplines, aiming to bridge the gender gap prevalent in these fields. The primary goal is to encourage underprivileged girl students to pursue their dreams of obtaining an undergraduate STEM degree by providing crucial financial support.
In its inaugural phase, the program plans to extend financial aid to over 2,000 deserving female students from across the country. These students aspire to enroll in esteemed universities to pursue higher education within various STEM domains.
The pressing issues of limited access, lack of mentorship, and financial constraints are often barriers preventing students in India from opting for STEM degrees. To alleviate these challenges, the ‘STEM Stars’ scholarship will cover a comprehensive range of expenses incurred during the duration of the STEM course, including tuition fees, living expenses, and study materials. The financial aid provided can amount to up to Rs 1 lakh annually.
In a pioneering move, the scholarship will encompass institutions accredited by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in its inaugural year. This encompasses prestigious institutions such as IITs, BITS-Pilani, NITs, and distinguished medical schools. Sumit Virmani, Trustee of Infosys Foundation, highlighted the initiative’s significance: “Poverty denies many youngsters, in India, the right to education, and girls are often the most impacted. At Infosys Foundation, we believe it is vital to support education for underprivileged girl students and to help them realize their potential. The ‘STEM Stars’ scholarship program seeks to empower aspiring girl students with a holistic educational ecosystem.”
