JSW Steel Ltd announced on January 5 that its subsidiary, JSW Utkal Steel Ltd, has obtained possession of 2677.80 acres of forest land in Rajnagar, Odisha for the establishment of a greenfield Integrated Steel Plant.
The environmental clearance for the project was received in 2022 and re-validated in 2023 by the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
JSW Utkal Steel Ltd also secured possession of 272.51 acres of non-forest land, which has been leased by the Odisha government.
The total land required for the project is 2950.31 acres, with 2677.80 acres designated as forest land. The project involves setting up a 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant, including cement and power plants. The capital expenditure for the project is estimated to be approximately Rs. 65,000 crores.
Phase-wise work on the project is scheduled to commence once the land is handed over to the company.
The land parcel, situated near the Paradip port in Odisha, was originally earmarked for Posco, a Korean company. However, Posco abandoned its plans for a 12-mtpa steel plant due to local protests, delayed environmental clearance, and land acquisition issues.
