On Government e-Marketplace, UP Government emerges as the biggest purchaser

27 Sep 2022 , 09:18 AM

With a gross merchandise value (GMV) of over Rs24,000 crore, the Uttar Pradesh government has emerged as the portal’s biggest customer on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the GeM site to the national government in August 2016. It is a complete e-marketplace where the federal and various state government organizations and wings may purchase frequently used products and services.

The action intends to encourage domestic industries and new micro, small, and medium-sized businesses as well as to provide competition and openness in the government procurement market.

“In 2021—22, the state made purchases of Rs11,274 crore, or more than 10% of all GeM purchases during that fiscal year. The state has spent about Rs24,000 crore on acquisitions thus far, according to Kumar Chandrahas Jha, GeM’s CEO at the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry.

In UP, the portal has about 14,000 customers and 428,000 merchants registered. In 2018 and 2019, the Center honored UP with the Best Buyer Award and Super Buyer Award, respectively. The value of GeM purchases made by the government in 2021—22 is almost double what the state recorded during the previous fiscal year.

The GeM site estimated a total GMV of Rs 1 trillion for all of India in 2021—22, and since its launch, the total value of procurement has surpassed the Rs 3 trillion level. Currently, GeM has 5.1 million registered merchants and service providers, 62,000 registered government sector buyers, and 62,000 registered buyers.

The Center has been gradually enlarging the GeM product selection by providing over 300 services and 10,000 product categories to customers in the public sector.
