On Sunday, Piyush Goyal, the union minister for commerce and industry, urged the corporate sector to support productivity research, farmer education, and the branding of Indian cotton. He emphasized the necessity of adopting the highest global standards for cotton productivity.
It is time for India to adopt global standards in cotton production, Goyal, who also holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Textiles, said during an interactive discussion with stakeholders of the cotton textile value chain held at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi. To increase cotton productivity in India and increase farmer incomes, all stakeholders must exchange best practices.
To increase productivity research, farmer education, and branding, the private sector must make a contribution, and the government will equal that contribution.”
Goyal asserted an integrated strategy and claimed that to strengthen the cotton value chain, the private sector must engage in a mission mode.
According to Goyal, cotton serves as a link between the agricultural and textile industries. Both domestically and internationally, a sizeable portion of all textile and garment products are made from cotton. It is essential to get organized to improve both productivity and quality when market access opens through FTAs.
“We need to regain our leadership in the world’s cotton market, and India views the textile industry as a vital industry that will support the creation of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he stated.
The Minister claimed that deals allowing duty-free access to textiles with Australia and the United Arab Emirates have provided commerce a boost, and comparable deals with the EU, the United Kingdom, and Canada are currently being negotiated.
