In its press release on Monday, Jio Platforms Limited (communication arm of Reliance Industries Ltd.), India’s leading digital service provider, announced its Joint Venture with SES, a leading global satellite-based content connectivity solutions provider. The Joint Venture will be called Jio Space Technology Limited which shall deliver the next generation scalable and affordable broadband services in India using satellite technology. JPL and SES will have 51% and 49% equity stake in the joint venture respectively.

The joint venture will provide SES’s satellite data and connectivity services in India, except for certain international aeronautical and maritime customers who may be served by SES. It will have up to 100 Gbps capacity from SES and will benefit from Jio’s premiere position and sales reach in India to unlock this market opportunity.

The joint venture will make use of the SES-12, SES’s high-throughput GEO satellite serving India, and O3b mPOWER, SES’s next-generation MEO constellation, to extend and complement Jio’s terrestrial network, increasing access to digital services and applications.

“While Jio continues to invest in 5G and expand its fibre-based connectivity and FTTH business, this new joint venture will advance the growth of multigigabit broadband. With additional coverage and capacity provided by satellite communications services, we will be able to expand our reach to remotest towns and villages, enterprises, government establishments, and consumers to the new Digital India. We are looking forward to this new journey that combines our massive reach and customer base with SES’s innovative leadership and expertise in the satellite industry,” commented Akash Ambani, Director of Jio.

RIL is currently trading at Rs2,333.75 down by Rs43.1 or 1.81% from its previous closing of Rs2,376.85 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs2,300 and has touched an intraday high and low of Rs2,343.20 and Rs2,300 respectively.
