Rupee dropped 32 paise to a new low of 81.94/$, on yesterday

In the midst of intense volatility on Thursday, the rupee fell 32 paisas to settle at an all-time low of 81.94 (provisional) versus the US dollar. The local currency was also negatively impacted by stable crude oil prices. The local currency in the interbank foreign exchange market started off strongly at 81.52 before giving back all of its gains to conclude at an all-time low of 81.94 versus the US dollar, a loss of 32 paise from its previous level.

The local unit’s intraday high and low values for the dollar were 81.51 and 81.94 respectively during the day. To conclude the day on Tuesday at 81.62 versus the US dollar, the rupee gained 20 paise. Due to Dussehra, the foreign exchange market was shut down on Wednesday. The dollar index, which measures the strength of the US dollar against a basket of six other currencies, increased 0.06 % to 111.27. Brent crude futures, the international benchmark for crude oil, decreased by 0.8% to USD 93.30 a barrel.

The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 156.63 points or 0.27 % to close at 58,222.10 on the domestic equities market, while the larger NSE Nifty gained 57.50 points or 0.33 % to close at 17,331.80. According to exchange statistics, foreign institutional investors bought shares worth Rs1,344.63 crore on Tuesday, making them net purchasers on the capital market.
