On November 14, Subrata Roy, the founder of Sahara India Pariwar, died. He was 75 years old.
Saharasri ji, an inspirational leader and visionary, passed away on 14th November 2023 at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest after an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, diabetes, and hypertension’ the Sahara group said in a statement.
Following a decrease in health, he was taken to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on November 12, 2023. Roy leaves behind his wife, Swapna Roy, and two boys, Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy.
Born in Bihar’s Araria in 1948, he began with a small investment of Rs 2,000 to develop Sahara India. In the 1990s, he relocated to Lucknow and established his group’s headquarters there. Time magazine once named the company the second-largest employer in India, after only Indian Railways.
The firm flourished over time, and Roy became renowned for inviting film stars to events and having ‘friends’ from all political parties. He has close relations with Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party.
