On Thursday, Tata Power said that it has started working with the Enel Group to automate and digitalize India’s distribution system. In order to conduct two important pilot projects through the former’s Delhi-based distribution business, Tata Power partnered with Enel Group, one of the most integrated companies in the global electricity and renewable sectors, according to a company release.
In New Delhi, Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, and Robert Ronald Denda, CEO of Gridspertise Srl, signed the agreement pertaining to the same.
The agreement was signed concurrently with Giorgia Meloni, president of the Italian Council of Ministers’ formal visit.
According to the agreement, Gridspertise, an affiliate of the Enel Group and jointly owned by Enel Grids and CVC Capital Partners, will collaborate closely with Tata Power’s distribution arm Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (TPDDL), which serves 1.9 million customers in north Delhi, on project implementation.
In the first pilot project, Tata Power will participate in an international co-creation initiative for Gridpertise’s exclusive QED – Quantum Edge Device with a focus on speeding the digitalization and automation of secondary substations.
Under this cooperative effort, grid functionalities will be virtualized, allowing for network security and control, automation, real-time problem detection, and service restoration.
The other project aims to pilot the use of Gridpertises’ metering technology in Delhi’s electricity distribution system. Its main objective is to test and assess the new hybrid smart metering technology, which uses a hybrid Power Line Communication (PLC) and Radio Frequency (RF) communication channel (RF).
By automatically switching between PLC and RF channels in response to the conditions in the field in real time, it provides a reliable, effective, and secure communication route. Both initiatives are consistent with Tata Power and Enel Group’s commitment to advancing their shared objective of accelerating the energy transformation.
Tata Power is leading a significant revolution in the Indian power distribution environment by targeted technological interventions. With its discoms, the company oversees a distribution network with more than 0.4 million circuit kilometres and 12 million customers throughout India. A further achievement was the installation of 0.5 million smart metres.
