Telecom Sector's Adjusted Gross Revenue Rises 2.5% in Q1 2023: TRAI Report

The telecom service sector witnessed a 2.5 % sequential rise in adjusted gross revenue (AGR), amounting to Rs 64,494 crore, during the March 2023 quarter, as per data disclosed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on August 21. On a year-on-year basis, the adjusted gross revenue observed a notable increase of 9.5 % compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Noteworthy insights from the TRAI report encompass the metrics of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), revealing distinct trends for postpaid and prepaid categories. The monthly ARPU for wireless services recorded a minimal 0.83 % uptick, showing a marginal increase.

As per data, amongst the revenue figures, the gross revenue (GR), Applicable Gross Revenue (ApGR), and Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) for the Telecom Service Sector in Q1 2023 were reported as Rs 85,356 crore, Rs 78,631 crore, and Rs 64,494 crore, respectively. In comparison with the previous quarter, the GR decreased by 3.19 %, ApGR increased by 2.62 %, and AGR increased by 2.53 % in the March 2023 quarter.

The TRAI report, titled ‘Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators January – March 2023’, highlights a year-on-year growth rate of 11.69 %, 11.12 %, and 9.52 % in GR, ApGR, and AGR, respectively, for the same quarter last year. The license fee experienced an uptick from Rs 5,031 crore in the quarter ended December 2022 to Rs 5,159 crore in the quarter ended March 2023.

The license fee growth rates for the quarter are reported as 2.53 % sequentially and 9.47 % year-on-year. Specifically, for wireless services, the monthly ARPU witnessed a marginal 0.83 % increase, reaching Rs 142.32 in Q1 2023, from Rs 141.14 in the previous quarter. In comparison to the same period of the previous year, the wireless service monthly ARPU registered an 11.91 % surge.
