The Defence Ministry and BHEL sign a Rs 2,956 crore contract to supply the Navy with 16 ultra rapid gun mounts

29 Nov 2023 , 10:51 AM

The state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. and the defence ministry signed a Rs 2,956 crore agreement on Tuesday to purchase 16 upgraded super rapid gun mounts (SRGM) and accessories for the Indian Navy. A medium-caliber anti-missile and anti-aircraft defence weapon system with great precision and a continuous rate of fire is the SRGM.

According to the ministry, both newly constructed and in-service Indian Navy ships would have the improved SRGMs installed.

‘The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with M/s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Haridwar on November 28 for procurement of 16 Upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) along with associated equipment/accessories for Indian Navy under Buy (Indian) category at a total cost of Rs 2956.89 crore,’ the statement read.

It stated that BHEL will produce the enhanced SRGM at its plant in Haridwar.

‘The weapon system is capable of multiple engagements in multi-threat scenarios and has a proven record of very good performance against missiles and highly manoeuvrable fast attack crafts,’ claimed the ministry.

It stated that both freshly constructed platforms and ships currently in service with the Indian Navy will have the updated SRGMs installed.

‘The project will generate an employment of two and half lakh mandays over a period of five years and encourage active participation of various Indian industries including MSME, thus significantly contributing to the government’s efforts to achieve ‘Atmanirbharta’ in defence,’ stated the statement.
