An influential energy company has placed an order worth over Rs 500 crore with Thermax, a provider of energy and environmental solutions, to establish five bio-CNG plants around India. The business said in a news release on December 12 that these plants, which will be situated in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, would be able to produce 110 tonnes of bio-CNG per day (TPD).
More than 1,000 TPD of local feedstock, such as rice straw, Napier grass, cane garbage, and soya trash, will be used by the units. The produced bio-CNG will be utilized by the client for both captive and commercial purposes. This is a component of Thermax’s larger plan to offer biochemical and bioenergy-related solutions.
Thermax has also committed to installing 1 GW of hybrid renewable energy solutions, encompassing both intra-state and inter-state projects, by FY 2027. One of the 290 MWp (commissioned and under construction) projects in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, is a wind and solar bundled captive power plant with 100 MW of wind and 90 MWp of solar electricity.
The project will be completed in stages, and top companies in the tire, auto component, petrochemical, and textile sectors will use the final product. The organization oversees 140 MWp of operating capacity, with an extra 145 MWp in the process of being built, more than 300 MW in development, and 400 MW in the works.
Thermax also said that it intends to build gasification facilities that can process coal at rates of 100 to 500 TPD and have carbon capture capabilities. With funding from the Department of Science and Technology, the firm collaborated with IIT Delhi to establish a trial gasifier project at its Pune factory. This method is especially useful for hard-to-abate businesses like the steel industry, as it transforms high-ash Indian coal into fuels with increased value. According to the company’s press statement, it fits with the prime minister’s plan to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030.
