UK's longest-serving Monarch for 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II, dies at 96

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning queen for 70 years, died on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She died at the age of 96.

Her death puts an end to the longest reign in British history, as well as one of the longest reigns by any head of state.

According to Buckingham Palace, she rested eternally at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, where royal family members turned to her aid as her condition deteriorated.

The queen was in good health long into her 90s, but she used a cane in public following the death of her 73-year-old husband, Philip, in 2021. She was hospitalised for a night in London in October for testing, and her public appearances became limited after that.

With Queen Elizabeth’s prolonged reign coming to an end, the United Kingdom will enter a new age of monarchy, with her 73-year-old son Charles assuming the throne.

Queen Elizabeth II witnessed 15 British prime ministers come and go in her seven decades on the throne, from Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher to Boris Johnson to Liz Truss.

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will be recognised as Queen Consort, a title granted by Queen Elizabeth II after years of debate dating back to before she even married Prince Charles.

Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to ascend to the throne following India’s independence from colonial authority in 1952, and she treasured the “warmth and hospitality” she experienced during her three State Visits to the nation throughout her reign, in 1961, 1983, and 1997.
