Vedanta Group and Taiwan's Innolux are in talks to collaborate on display fabrication

9 Nov 2023 , 02:41 AM

According to an executive of the Indian conglomerate firm, Vedanta Group is in talks with Taiwan-based TFT LCD manufacturer Innolux Corporation for a display fabrication unit in India. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the state minister for electronics and IT, was met by representatives of the two companies.

‘Today, I received visits from Mr. YJ Chen, CEO of Vedanta Displays Ltd.; Mr. Sunil Duggal, Chairman of Strategy and Policy, Vedanta Group; Mr. James Yang, President; and Mr. Jyh Chau Wang, Director, Innolux. In an X post, the minister said, ‘We talked about India’s vision and goals in domestic display manufacturing, to achieve Atmanirbharta in electronics manufacturing.’

A spokesman for Vedanta’s semiconductor and display business stated that talks between the two companies over the display fab are ongoing.

‘At Vedanta, we are committed to supporting the government’s vision of a self-reliant India and are working towards establishing a display fab to enable Atmanirbharta in hi-tech electronics manufacturing,’ stated a spokesperson.

The Vedanta Group has declared that it would establish a manufacturing facility for electrical chips and displays in India.

Prior to this, Vedanta and the massive Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn established a joint venture and declared their intention to invest USD 19.5 billion in the establishment of a semiconductor wafer fabrication facility. But the joint venture could not last.

Foxconn and Vedanta are currently seeking partners to establish semiconductor manufacturing facilities in India.

In an effort to secure semiconductor business, Vedanta has also contacted Japanese firms.
