Beginning with the FIFA World Cup 2022, which begins in Qatar on November 20, all current sporting properties will be moved from the company’s current video-on-demand service VOOT to JioCinema, by Viacom18.
Viacom18 is a joint venture between Reliance-controlled TV18 and US entertainment giant Paramount Global (previously ViacomCBS).
The business intends to make the JioCinema app the place to stream live sports.
These include the LaLiga (Spanish), Ligue 1 (French), and Serie A (Italy) football leagues, as well as the NBA and ATP Masters (Tennis), Abu Dhabi T10 (Cricket), and the NBA and ATP Finals (Basketball). The Indian Premier League (IPL) decision will be made later.
FIFA matches will be shown in standard and high definition on Sports18-1 while they are on linear TV. They will be offered in Bengali, English, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, and other languages on JioCinema.
JioCinema will also provide a 4K feed of the full competition to its fans without charging a subscription price. Multi-camera views, which are not possible on linear television, will be one of the additional offerings.
For a staggering $55 million, Viacom18 had purchased the rights to the FIFA World Cup in 2022. JioCinema was chosen over VOOT because of the service’s larger user base.
