Delhi University, MetLife start course in actuarial sciences

The course has 12 papers including financial economics, statistical methods, financial mathematics, business economics, etc

Hindu College of Delhi University and MetLife Insurance Ltd is offering an add-on course in actuarial sciences from this year.

The certificate course is aimed at enhancing employability of students in the insurance sector by equipping them with extra skills. The Hindu Actuarial Science certification involves application of quantitative skills to problems that normally involve risk or uncertainty, together with finance.

The course has 12 papers including financial economics, statistical methods, financial mathematics, business economics, business awareness models, etc. There is no fixed duration for completion of the course. Students have to clear all the papers before being awarded the certificate. At the end of each semester, the college will conduct its own exam.

The course equips students with analytical skills for solving problems in the areas of risk management, healthcare and public policy. Students can enrol for the course in two batches; while the first one has started on 16th August this year, the other batch will in January 2013.

To practice as an actuarial scientist in India, one has to be a member of the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) and qualify for the various academic programmes.
