MFs offload equity worth Rs. 14.23bn in April

Mutual funds net investment declined to around 24% to Rs. 504.32 billion in the secondary market in April 2013 from Rs. 665.01 billion in March 2013, according to SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) data.

Like the previous months, mutual funds sold of Rs. 14.23 billion in equity compared to Rs. 16.14 billion sold in March 2013. However, mutual funds invested Rs. 518.55 billion in debt market in April 2013 as against of Rs. 681.14 billion invested in March 2013.

As on April 30, 2013, there were a total of 1,229 schemes under mutual funds of which income/debt oriented schemes were 791 (64.4%), growth/ equity oriented scheme were 348 (28.3%), exchange traded funds were 37 schemes (3%), balanced schemes were 32 (2.6%) and fund of funds investing overseas schemes were 21 (1.7%).

The number of schemes at the end of 2012-13 was 1,294 of which income/debt oriented schemes were 857 (66.2%), growth/equity oriented scheme were 347 (26.8%), exchange traded funds were 37 schemes (2.9%), balanced schemes were 32 (2.5%) and fund of funds investing overseas schemes were 21 (1.6%).

S&P BSE Sensex increased 3.5% to 19,504.2 on April 30, 2013 from 18,835.8 on March 28, 2013, registering a rise of 668.4 points.

During April 2013, Sensex recorded an intraday high of 19,622.7 on April 30, 2013 and an intraday low of 18,144.2 on April 15, 2013.
