West Bengals highest literary honour presented to Professor Sekhar Bandyopadhyay of New Zealand

The Rabindra Puraskar, an award given in the state of West Bengal, is one of the highest honorary literary awards in India. Professor Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, Director of the New Zealand India Research Institute, based in Wellington, has received this prestigious award this year.The award was bestowed upon him in the 'other languages' category for his exceptional work on the book 'Decolonization in South Asia: Meanings of Freedom in Post-independence West Bengal, 1947-52'.

Prof. Bandyopadhyay's book discusses the concept of freedom and what it means to different individuals. The book also analyses transitional politics in West Bengal in the post-independence era and would be of interest to academics from the fields of political science, sociology, social anthropology and cultural and Asian studies.

Prof. Sekhar Bandyopadhyay is the inaugural Director of the New Zealand India Research Institute and Professor of Asian History at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Prior to his move to New Zealand he taught at the University of Calcutta and Kalyani University in India.
