With Southern India gearing up to enjoy the festival season of Onam, which is to be celebrated on 22nd August, gold is casting its spell across the state. With gold being an integral part of Southern India and their festivals, there will be special initiatives across retail jewellers in the region to celebrate the festive season with style keeping in mind its traditional aspect.
 
Onam, the harvest festival, is the biggest Malyali festival which takes place over 10 days and is linked to many elements of Kerala’s culture and tradition. The most significant part is the wearing of new clothes with women draping a mundu and gold top.
Wearing gold jewellery during Onam is a tradition for women and being a festival of prosperity and abundance, people indulge in new jewellery pieces; an apt time to buy, wear and celebrate gold. As a popular tradition children are greeted with Onam wishes with a gold coin given by the elders in the house.

As Onam is considered an auspicious day for the buying and wearing of gold, there will be several promotions and offers around the festival time at leading jewellery retailers across the county.

Speaking on the occasion Ajay Mitra, Managing Director - Indian Sub-Continent, World Gold Council said, “Gold is something that is synonymous to Southern India; as they love to spend on gold both from an investment as well as from lifestyle perspective. And the yellow metal becomes all the more important with their festivals, culture and traditions. Onam is one of the most important occasions where Gold comes into play in various forms. Buying gold on this festival is considered auspicious and brings in prosperity and new beginnings.

Across the country, gold retailers will be running gold jewellery shopping festivals, jewellery Mahotsavs as well as launching new gold jewellery designs and collections to commemorate the occasion of gold buying and wearing on the occasion of Onam. Various retail jewellers in Chennai have launched a special festival collection available at GRT Jewellers, Prince Jewellers and NAC Jewellers.
