GAIL (India) to Launch First Green Hydrogen Project in Central India by April

26 Mar 2024 , 01:51 PM

GAIL (India) Ltd, a state-run natural gas company, is set to inaugurate its maiden green hydrogen project in central India by April, as per three company insiders.

The project, located at the Vijaipur complex in Madhya Pradesh, will feature a 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyzer imported from Canada.

The unit aims to produce approximately 4.3 metric tons of hydrogen daily with a purity level of about 99.999% by volume, utilizing renewable energy sources.

India targets achieving an annual green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons by 2030.

GAIL (India) Limited, previously known as Gas Authority of India Ltd., operates as a central public sector undertaking, engaging in various business segments including natural gas, liquefied natural gas, liquid hydrocarbon, liquefied petroleum gas transmission, petrochemicals, city gas distribution, renewable energy (including solar & wind), exploration and production, GAILTEL, and electricity generation.

Recognized as a Maharatna PSU by the Indian Government since February 1, 2013, GAIL is among the 12 PSUs bestowed with this prestigious status.

The primary objective of green hydrogen is to contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5°C by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, particularly by replacing grey hydrogen. Green hydrogen also aims to facilitate a broader range of end-uses in specific economic sectors, sub-sectors, and activities. These end-uses may present technical challenges in terms of decarbonization through alternative means such as electrification with renewable power.

Green hydrogen’s main applications are anticipated to be in heavy industry, where it can be used for high-temperature processes alongside electricity, as a feedstock for the production of green ammonia and organic chemicals, and as an alternative to coal-derived coke for steelmaking. Additionally, it holds potential for use in long-haul transport, including shipping, aviation, and to a lesser extent heavy goods vehicles. Furthermore, green hydrogen is seen as a viable option for long-term energy storage.
