“The Secrets of My Success: The Story of Boost Juice, Juicy Bits and All” is as unconventional as a self-help book can get and yet the cover might sway most of us into slotting it as another of ‘Shed your kilos’ fitness guide, more so with the smiling Janine Allis almost accentuating a message to that effect. But as soon as you have read a few lines, you know this one’s dripping with engaging humour and hearteningly told in a self-deprecating manner, without a trace of the patronizing tone that most self-help books endorse with brazen pride.

Think business and you trust a Dhirubhai Ambani or a Warren Buffet …What’s it that this housewife turned businesswoman has to share about business? Plenty! Among other things, her phenomenal story of focused hard work, a handy guide especially for those desirous of running their own businesses. Allis shows us how people, positive attitude and principles combined with loads of common sense help you succeed in business in particular and life in general.

It’s a story of a bohemian young girl who was unafraid to try out new things and had the tenacity to make things happen across businesses …Things she did right, those she didn’t, what she learnt the hard way, which the reader can benefit from. Here’s a woman with the guts to think big, alongside a happy family, hearty demeanour and healthy body…a seemingly impossible feat in today’s nerve-wracking era, nonetheless true.

Stories of most successful business icons make a fleeting mention of their families, a Thank You credit at best, but the most endearing aspect of Allis’s book is the vivid account of her family’s deep involvement in her business and how together they have created her unique and vibrant brand.

The book makes for a great read, with the flow and the font complementing each other in a perfect symphony. The reader will immensely gain from the practical advice to start and run a successful business, implications on personal life and helpful tips to counter the myriad challenges. But if you are looking for intricate concepts, cluttered charts and anecdotes of astonishing business deals, this certainly is not the book for you.

Boost Juice has no presence in India and neither does Allis make any mention of our homeland save for her love for yoga. Yet one can’t help equating her to a karma yogin – a spiritual, towering inspiration for those of us hesitant to take the plunge into the mists of the unknown – whether towards business or simply out of our comfort zones - to explore our true and full potential. Readers of serious corporate literature might find the book a wee bit simplistic but to most others, therein lies its real beauty.
